Facts About Osteoporosis

Facts 1 Facts 2 Facts 3 Facts 4 Facts 5 Facts 6
Around the world, at least one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will suffer a fracture caused by weak bones. Fractures result in pain, debilitation and loss of quality of life. Thirty-three per cent of older adults who suffer a hip fracture become physically impaired and lose their ability to live independently one year after the fracture. At least one in five will die within the year following fracture. Vertebral (spine) fractures can cause extreme pain, long or short term disability, dowager's hump, and significant loss in quality of life. Without treatment, the risk of suffering a cascade of new fractures is very high.

Five Essential Strategies to Reduce Risk of Osteoporosis and Fractures

  1. Exercise regularly
  2. Ensure a diet rich in bone-healthy nutrients
  3. Avoid negative lifestyle habits and maintain a healthy weight
  4. Identify the risk factors which you can't change
  5. Talk to your doctor: get tested, get treated if required
