This year, SPODOM supported an educational initiative that brings together scientific knowledge, public awareness and intergenerational learning through the presentation and promotion of the children’s book O Tombo da Avó Francisca, written by Joana Fonseca Ferreira, a Portuguese rheumatologist. Campaign overview: “O Tombo da Avó Francisca” The book was presented on 20 October 2026 at the headquarters of the Central Regional Section of the Portuguese Medical Association in Coimbra, Portugal, as part of the World Osteoporosis Day commemorations. The initiative addresses a fundamental public health message: bone health starts in childhood, and osteoporosis prevention is a lifelong commitment. Through an accessible and engaging story, the book aims to help children understand the importance of bone health and encourage healthy habits, including balanced nutrition and regular physical activity. It also promotes conversations between children, parents and grandparents, recognising that knowledge acquired at an early age can influence the health behaviours of the entire family. The initiative is part of the intergenerational project “Grandparents and Grandchildren: Healthy Bones from Childhood to Adulthood”, developed by Joana Fonseca Ferreira. Its educational approach places children in the role of agents of change, helping to extend bone health awareness beyond schools and into households and communities.
